Larry
Woods is well known for his innovative gem cutting styles.
Original faceting, abstract organic gem carvings, and his
signature series of combination cut gems are all part of his
artistic repertoire. He
began cutting gems as an apprentice at the Salt Mine jewelry store
in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1980.
He then went on to establish Pyramid Gems in Dallas Texas,
with his wife Stacia Woods in 1986. He began importing rough gems,
from Brazil, Africa, and South East Asia. As his business grew he
started to gain interest in new cutting styles. After seeing gems
cut by German lapidary artist Bernerd Munstiener, Larry began
experimenting with carving and combining carving with faceted
forms in gem material. In 1991 Larry won first place in the AGTA
Cutting Edge contest "Combination Cuts"
(prestigious industry event for gem cutting),
for his trademark Medicine Wheel™
gem design. Larry also won third place in the Cutting Edge
contest for an abstract Deco carving in Blue Chalcedony
in 1998. His work has been featured in many trade and gem
magazines including the cover of Lapidary Journal (Feb..'98).
Currently Larry resides with his family, wife Stacia and
daughter Elaina, in "the Woods" near Blanco, TX in the
beautiful TX hill country. Stacia Woods is also an accomplished
artist and she creates a beautiful symbiosis between Larry's work
and her unique jewelry creations. Together they create
"Jewels from the Woods", available at fine jewelry
stores and galleries throughout the world.
Thank-you,
Larry
